BUFFALO (N.Y.) (AP). A New Yorker who fired a high-powered weapon at a retail store in Buffalo, wounding a person in 2017, pleaded guilty Thursday to a charge of attempted murder and agreed to serve a 10 year prison sentence.

Travis Green, 34 of Buffalo, accepted the plea agreement during an Erie County Court hearing, said District Attorney John Flynn. The sentencing date was set at July 6.

The police called it a miracle more people weren't injured or killed after Green shot more than 20 bullets from the parking area at the Dollar General in Cheektowaga. At the time, several customers and employees were in the store. A 53-year old man was injured in the shoulder outside the store but survived.

Authorities said Green went into the store earlier on November 14, 2017 to ask for a job application. He became angry and left. He then left the store and got out of his car a pump action rifle.

Green tried to flee but was captured by police after a nearby store owner saw the shooting and jumped in his car. He drove to Dollar General, struck Green with it, then drove away.

The police said that they found more than 850 ammunition rounds and a second gun in Green's vehicle.

Green's mom said that stress was a possible factor in the shooting because Green had just recently split up with his spouse and lost his employment. Green was initially ruled incompetent for trial, but was deemed competent after he began receiving treatment.

Green's attorney, Paul Dell said that his client has had a difficult time coming to terms with the actions he took.

Dell stated that he felt very lucky that no one had been seriously injured. This was not a political or hate crime, but the worst day of Dell's life.

The Buffalo News

Dell reported that Green will only serve about three years of his 10-year prison sentence, because he's been in jail since the shooting. He will also get credit for good behavior.
