With a 90-yard run as the final seconds ticked off the clock, Team USA’s women’s Eagles rugby team won the bronze medal in rugby sevens at the Olympics. The heavily-favored Australian team was defeated, and it marked America’s first Olympic medal in this sport. The Eagles were behind 12-7 with only a minute left, but Alex Sedrick’s 90-yard sprint brought victory. The American players dropped to their knees, and the bench sprinted to join the celebration. The American women had previously lost to New Zealand in the semifinals but managed to secure the bronze medal.
